Upcycle Old Wine Bottles

I used to collect empty wine bottles and put them on a bottle tree in the front yard.

Recently a few broke in the heavy storms here, so I took a look around for better ideas to upcycle them. Check out a few I found below.

Self-Watering Planter

You can create self-watering planters using empty wine bottles for your mini gardens.

How self-watering planter glass is made


  1. Cut the bottle into two halves by wrapping acetone dipped cotton wick at the center of the bottle, setting it on fire, and then dipping the bottle in ice cold water.
  2. Sandpaper the edges of both the bottom and top half of the bottle to smoothen the edges.
  3. Invert the bottle’s upper half and put it inside the bottom half.
  4. Thread an oil lamp wick down the bottle’s neck and make sure it touches your bottle’s base.
  5. Fill your planter with water, place dirt, and then plant seeds on it.

  1. Use the glass cutting drill bit to cut two to three holes at the bottom of your bottles.
  2. Attach a saucer/plate to the bottom using epoxy.
  3. To hang the bird feeder, wrap a piece of copper wire around the bottle’s top and create a hanger.
  4. Fill the feeder with your choice of bird feed.

How bottle wall is made


  1. Drill out the bottoms of the bottles using the diamond-tipped drill bit. 
  2. Attach metal tubing to signify the top and bottom of your glass wall.
  3. Use shower curtain fittings on the metal tubing. These fittings will hold the curtain rods with bottles.
  4. Install the curtain rods vertically to create the “skeleton” of the wall. 
  5. Thread the bottles on each rod while placing a rubber washer between the bottles.
